Bilingual Learning Assistant (Dari/Farsi speaking), 27.55 hours per week fixed term

Hornby High School is seeking a caring and capable Bilingual Learning Assistant (BLA) to support a student with additional learning needs from refugee and migrant background.

This is a rewarding opportunity to work alongside teachers, students, and families to help learners access the curriculum, engage in school life, and strengthen communication between home and school.

About the Role

The successful applicant will provide:

  • In-class learning support for a student with additional learning needs who speaks Dari/Farsi

  • First-language support to help the student understand classroom instructions and learning tasks

  • Home–school liaison support, assisting communication between the family and the school

  • Support for student engagement, wellbeing, and participation in school programmes.

This role is for 27.55 hours per week (including kai) and is fixed term until 11 December 2026. The funding is based on student need while they remain at Hornby High School.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is fluent in Dari/Farsi, with the ability to communicate confidently in English

  • Has strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Works well with young people and families from diverse cultural backgrounds

  • Is reliable, patient, and able to work collaboratively with teaching staff

  • Has a commitment to supporting student learning and wellbeing

Previous experience working in education or with young people would be an advantage but is not essential.

A satisfactory police vet and legal right to work in New Zealand are required.
