Bilingual Learning Assistant (Kurdish, Levantine Arabic and/or Farsi Speaking – 16 hours per week

Hornby High School is seeking a caring and capable Bilingual Learning Assistant (BLA) to support students from refugee and migrant backgrounds.
This is a rewarding opportunity to work alongside teachers, students, and families to help learners access the curriculum, engage in school life, and strengthen communication between home and school.
About the Role
The successful applicant will provide:

In-class learning support for students who speak Kurdish, Levantine Arabic and/or Farsi

First-language support to help students understand classroom instructions and learning tasks

Home–school liaison support, assisting communication between families and the school

Support for student engagement, wellbeing, and participation in school programmes
We are looking for someone who:

Is fluent in Kurdish, Levantine Arabic and/or Farsi, with the ability to communicate confidently in English

Has strong interpersonal and communication skills

Works well with young people and families from diverse cultural backgrounds

Is reliable, patient, and able to work collaboratively with teaching staff

Has a commitment to supporting student learning and wellbeing
Previous experience working in education or with young people would be an advantage but is not essential.
This position is fixed term until the end of term 4, 2026 to provide targeted language and learning support for identified students. A satisfactory police vet and legal right to work in New Zealand are required. Please note there is a second vacancy to be advertised of a similar nature.
