Local slam poetry identity inspires creativity

Daisy Lavea-Timo, local slam poetry ‘guru’, inspires Hornby High School students in a series of interactive workshops

Daisy is a well known slam or performance poetry exponent. It was an absolute privilege to have her spend three periods with us through the Writers in Schools programme – Read NZ Te Pou Muramura.

Daisy visited Hornby High School on Friday 28th October. Five classes participated in Daisy’s three workshops on Slam Poetry. In groups and as a class the students created slam poetry with a process of breaking a given topic down into the five senses. Daisy was impressed by the students’ willing contributions and enthusiastic attitudes, and staff were very impressed with the student’s engagement and creativity.

This was a wonderful opportunity for our rangatahi to experience the work of a world renowned poet. Students were in awe of her performance of slam poetry.

This is the very stuff of creative excellence, and a fabulous example of our Manaiakalani ‘Learn, Create, Share’  pedagogy in a non digital context. Creativity is a way of thinking and being, not just a series of measured outputs.
