Hornby High School
International Programmes
Hornby High School has a long tradition of welcoming and supporting students from all over the world, being one of the first schools in Christchurch to provide for international students. Hornby High School offers a multicultural, inclusive, caring environment in which international students are made very welcome. We are committed to the well-being and academic achievement of all students.
Hornby is a major residential and retail suburb at the western edge of Christchurch. The school is situated about 9km from the Christchurch vibrant re-developing city central business district, and is close to the International and Domestic Airport. Also, few locations give such easy access to an amazing variety of scenery. With mountains, rivers and beaches less than an hour from the city, activities like surfing, swimming, cycling, walking, skiing and snowboarding are a big part of the Christchurch lifestyle.

For International Students
Code of Practice
When students come to study in New Zealand, education providers have an important responsibility to ensure that those students are well informed, safe and properly cared for. To support this, the New Zealand government has developed the Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice 2021. Hornby High School is a signatory of this Code.

Orientation
Before international students begin classes, they attend an orientation programme and meet with the International Director to discuss their course of study. All new students take an English test to help us with class placement and the number of ESOL hours the student may need to be able to cope with mainstream study requirements.
Accommodation
Our international students live with local host families who live within easy traveling distance to school, this is a great way to experience the warmth and friendliness of New Zealand families.
Our Homestay Coordinator will assist with family placement and monitor the student while they are studying at Hornby.
Insurance & Health
It is compulsory while studying at Hornby High School for all international students to have suitable insurance cover. Medical, personal property and travel insurance should be carried, for protection from unseen events. The school works in partnership with Uni-care, offering those studying in New Zealand, insurance at a very reasonable and competitive price.
Hornby High School has a registered health nurse on site who can ensure the student sees the appropriate person such as a doctor, physiotherapist, optician, etc.
Quality Assurance
The Education Review Office (ERO) is a government department whose purpose is to evaluate and report publicly on the education and care of students in schools.
Our school is very proud of our most recent report, which is a very positive endorsement of the excellent leadership in our school and the outstanding work being done by our staff to support the learning and achievement of our students.
