Hornby High School

Learning Support

Hornby High School has a comprehensive Learning Support Department focusing on specialised programmes for students. Teaching is tailored to the individual, ranging from students requiring full-time support to those ‘catching up’ with school work.

The Learning Centre has a number of students who are working both toward NCEA and non-NCEA subjects.

Those students identified as needing a high level of support have an in-class teacher aide. The teacher’s aide will work with a group or with an individual as determined by the IEP goals.

All students identified as requiring learning support by staff are assessed using LUCID Rapid, Exact and Non-verbal tools. Further assessments are completed should this be required.

ESOL

English Language Support

Special programmes are available for students who need English Language support. Students needing English Language support are carefully assessed on entry to the school and have an individual programme created for them. This could be a few hours per week of Language work to a full programme of English teaching. Timetable flexibility enables ESOL students to link into mainstream subjects as their English language ability improves.
