Some of our top creative talent gets to mix with the best in the world

A group of our Pasifika students mix it with one of Aotearoa’s great creatives, Sir Ian Taylor

Last week Mr Liu , Head of Technology, took a group of our talented girls  to an Amazon Web Services event where they spent two days designing and developing an app idea that solved a need in education. The girls came up with an amazing app idea, and were well supported by ImpactED

Special guest speakers were Sir Ian Taylor of ‘Taylormade Media’, and Kendall Flutey from Banqer, who talked about how cloud technology has evolved to support their mahi.

As background, Wikipedia has this to say about Sir Ian:  “A former television presenter (notably for TVNZ children’s programmes Play School, Spot On and New Zealand’s Funniest Home Videos), Taylor founded Taylormade Media in 1989 as a television production company. The following year he established Animation Research Limited, which quickly became one of the top computer animation companies in New Zealand and known internationally for its work, particularly in television advertising and sports graphics.” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Taylor_(New_Zealand_businessman) ).

Creativity is found in every area of life, and opportunities to be part of experiences like this are essential to developing the whole person for each and every one of our rangatahi at Hornby High School, hence our commitment to our vision ‘he puna auaha a centre of creative excellence’ is so important.

The event was run by Arnika McPhail and the team at ImpactED, and we would like to say thanks to Arnika and the team for creating such a wonderful opportunity for our young people.
